Mark Campbell - A Canadian in Boston

I am a Canadian who was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. But despite the natural beauty, moderate climate, and warm gentle nature of my hometown, I somehow always felt that Boston was the place for me. As a kid, I was fascinated by the colonial history of New England, cheered for the underdog Bruins, cursed the hard luck Red Sox, set my sights on attending Harvard, and felt that Cheers represented life as it should be.

Soon after completing college at the University of British Columbia, I sold virtually everyting I owned, took only what I could carry, and headed south to... Las Vegas. It's not quite Boston, but Las Vegas was never intended as a destination. Instead, I was there to train for a much bigger adventure - a cross-country bicycle ride from California to Florida - still not Boston, but getting closer.

After two months of training, I was ready for my big ride. I didn't know it at the time, but the cycling trip was actually just the start of a much larger adventure. On the morning that I set out from the youth hostel in San Diego, I talked to a girl name Kelly, who just happened to be from...Boston. She gave me her card, and I promised to send email updates from the road. Two months later, after crossing the country by bike, I was in Boston visiting Kelly. A month later, I was living in Montreal and starting a career in the web biz. Kelly soon joined me in Montreal (her dream city), and on March 9, 2002 we were married - courthouse style. After five years in Montreal and two years of immigration procedures, we moved to Boston Massachusetts, just in time to see the Red Sox win the World Series.

It's been three years now since we made the move to the city of my dreams. The Red Sox are once again the World Champions, I'm gradually becoming an East Coaster, and I will apply for my US citizenship when the time comes (2009). However, a part of me will always be Canadian, no matter where I live. For now though, I'm very happy to be a Canadian in Boston.

My job with Modernista has finally delivered me from the wilderness of my previous commute. I am once again walking through the downtown as I go to and from work and home. Life is good again.

We've suffered in tiny student style apartments with fold up furntiure long enough. Last summer we finally made the move to a real home...dishwasher, AC, dining room, balcony, seventh floor view and that all important Boston luxury - space.

We chose Puerto Rico for our 2007 Spring Getaway, because we wanted to try something a little different from most Caribbean islands, but mostly because we could get a direct flight.
